Rooftop sunbeds at Aura Skypool, a long day at White Beach Atlantis, and one painful reminder to reapply.

Aura Skypool, The Palm Tower

A rooftop slice of paradise overlooking Palm Jumeirah. The salmon ceviche — bright citrus, fresh herbs, perfectly cured fish — was the standout.

White Beach Atlantis

Pristine sand, clear water, beach-club polish. Phones only, no professional cameras — so put it away and stay in the moment.

Downtown at Golden Hour

Walk the fountains around the Dubai Mall just before sunset — the skyline goes amber, the water turns mirror, and the city briefly slows down.

Inside the Dubai Mall

The mall is its own city. Skip straight to the aquarium — easily the best part of the whole place. A floor-to-ceiling tank with sand tiger sharks, rays, and schools of fish drifting by in slow motion. You can stand in front of it for an hour and not feel it.

Tea — and a Small Heresy

You may have been told to make a pilgrimage to TWG Tea — Luxury Teas. I'll say it: walk right past it. Find Casa Pons instead — Premium Tea Collection (Herbal, Black & Green). Jasmine buds, violet petals, dried fruit blends that smell like a spice market in a glass jar. Better tea, better story, half the markup.

Shop Local for the Good Stuff

For high-end purses, abayas, and tech, I preferred shopping local over the obvious mall counters — discreet boutiques tucked off the main drag, where you can find the perfect abaya and a serious bag side by side. Lesson learned: if you go this route, travel with someone. Some of these spots are quiet for a reason, and it's the kind of trip that's better with a second pair of eyes.

Desert Safari

Out past the city, the dunes roll on forever. On the drive out, even the mosque catching sunset looked cinematic. Then came the Bedouin-style tent for dinner, lanterns overhead, henna and oud in the air. Bring a scarf for the wind — and stay for the stars.

A Lesson in SPF

Even with SPF 70, I left with blisters and two weeks of peeling. Reapply often, wear a hat, and don't fall asleep on the cabana.
