A symphonic concert at Teatro alla Scala in Milan — one of the most iconic opera houses in Italy, with gilded balconies, red velvet, and a stage framed like a jewel box.
An evening of symphony at Teatro alla Scala in Milan — the orchestra on the historic stage, the house lights dimming over tier after tier of gold and velvet.
The Room
La Scala carries a rare kind of acoustic and cultural weight. Tier after tier of gold balconies, deep red velvet, and a stage framed like a jewel box. Every note rises and settles differently here.
The Performance
I was lucky enough to catch the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala on the night I went — the resident orchestra of the house, and one of the great ensembles in Europe. The sound seems to come from the walls themselves, and between movements you keep looking up at the layers of history wrapped into every detail.
That said, the room is the reason to go regardless of who's on the stage. Even on a quieter night, the gilded balconies, the velvet, the jewel-box framing of the stage — it all earns the evening on its own. A symphonic night in one of the world's great opera houses, well worth an evening of its own.
