Wild with purpose. The monkeys look playful — until one charges. A reminder that the forest is theirs.

Wild with purpose. The monkeys look playful right up until one charges. I stood too close, instinct won, I ran.

Scratches and bites aren't rare — the sanctuary keeps emergency staff on hand. This is their forest; we're guests.

The Sacred Stone

Beyond the clearings, the forest swallows the temples. Roots and moss creep over carved guardians until you can barely tell where the stone ends and the jungle begins.

A Living Temple

It's still a living temple. Worshippers move quietly through the stone, honoring rituals carried for centuries — incense, canang sari at the thresholds, sarongs at the gates.

On the Way

The road in is part of the experience. Stop at the small sanctuaries and roadside perches along the way — owls, fruit bats, and other creatures you won't meet inside the forest.

After the Forest

Stay out for sunset. Drive up toward the Campuhan or Tegallalang ridges and find a perch — the cloud forest below catches gold light and the mountains stack into the distance.
